I don’t think there are comprehensive dictionaries for either of these languages since they are Brown’s creations, but looking into the vocabulary/grammar of Old Norse and Icelandic for Nagal and Finnish or Mongolian for Tetkyr might help a little. ![]() I don’t know if Brown looked into this but it is still cool to think about imo. This is an interesting link between Mongol and early North European cultures, and might shed some light on the Gold’s choice to use these two specific cultures for the Obsidians. It is also worth mentioning that there are theories in the field of linguistics placing Finnish and Mongolian (among others) in the same language family, although they are highly controversial and not widely accepted. It is mentioned in the books that Obsidian culture prior to the Dark Revolt was based off of Mongol culture, so that would make some sense. >! Until Volsung Fá comes along and speaks in it, which makes sense since he wants to revive the old Obsidian culture !< Based on the little we see, Tetkyr seems to my amateur eyes to somewhat resemble Finnish, another North European language, or even potentially Mongolian. ![]() In Dark Age there are actually two Obsidian languages–the other one, Tetkyr, is briefly mentioned as the “lost tongue” that hasn’t been heard since the Dark Revolt. This goes with the theme of Obsidian culture being based off old Nordic/Viking culture. The language they speak, Nagal, is based off of Nordic languages and somewhat resembles Icelandic or Old Norse.
